"The Chronicles of a Country Parish" - A village appraisal of Sulgrave published in 1995

WILD FLOWERS
(Back to Chapter 4 Index)

The wild flower survey of Sulgrave was carried out in three main areas - the disused railway track, the bridlepath from the foot of Weston Road, and the fields and verges within the triangle formed by the railway track, the Weston Road and the bridlepath - see here.

Any wild flowers found elsewhere in the parish are included in the listings, but there were no varieties reported that did not also feature in the main survey area.

Sulgrave has no wild flowers of particular rarity or importance, but three types of orchid grow within the parish.

Many species found elsewhere in the county are missing in Sulgrave. This is due to the lack of marshland and riverbanks, and ancient woodland or other mature wooded areas, all of which would feature different varieties common to those habitats.

The main verges and fields throughout the parish have suffered from the use of chemicals over the years, as is true in most parishes in England. However it is noticeable and encouraging to see the return of the native wild flowers to those areas that have been untreated for the past few years, for example fields used for 'set-aside' or around the edges of fields where the sprays have not reached.

The disused railway track is the richest area for wild flowers, with 75% of the reported species found there.

It is to be hoped that the Pocket Park will be a future rich source of wild flowers due to the managed introduction of many wild species for naturalisation.
